Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal says he doesn’t believe a player needs to win trophies to be considered great.
Speaking to Soccer Saturday (via Sky Sports), the 30-year-old said trophies do help in boosting the ratings of a player, but he also pointed out that there were many truly great players in the history of the game that didn’t win any.
Prior to his arrival to North London, Aubameyang helped Saint-Etienne win the French League Cup in 2012/13 and after moving to Borussia Dortmund the following summer he was a big part of the teams that won the DFB Supercup that year, as well as in 2014. He also helped them win the 2017 DFB-Pokal.
However, he is yet to win silverware with Arsenal. The FA Cup is the Gunners’ last chance for it this season, with the Premier League far out of reach and their League Cup and Europa League campaigns both gone.
The Gabonese striker has been linked with departure for a while, with reports suggesting he was unhappy with the team’s inability to win trophies. His words will go some way in easing the worries of manager Mikel Arteta, who recently expressed his stance that a new contract for Aubameyang should be among the club’s priorities before the summer.
