Thomas Tuchel is set to take England into Euro 2028 after he signed a contract extension.

The Football Association (FA) appointed Tuchel in late 2024, with the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss starting his role in January of last year.

Tuchel signed a deal to take him through until the end of this year’s World Cup, for which England were the first European nation to qualify.

Indeed, England breezed through qualifying with a 100% record, without conceding a single goal. It is the second time they have qualified for a World Cup without shipping a goal, after doing so for the 1990 tournament.

The Three Lions have won 11 straight competitive fixtures, and Tuchel is delighted to have extended his stay in charge.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” said the German.

“It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup.

“It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said there is “no better candidate” for the England job than Tuchel.

He said: “I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028. He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers.

“We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see.

“There is simply no better candidate available in world football. With his big-game experience, knowledge and passion, he gives the squad the very best chance for success – this summer and with the once-in-a generation Euro being hosted on these shores in two years’ time.”

Tuchel had been among the names mooted as a potential candidate for the Manchester United job in the summer, with the Red Devils having only appointed Michael Carrick as an interim.
