Manchester United have exercised their option for a one-year extension on the contract of David De Gea, according to Sky Sports.
The Spain international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for a while now. Real Madrid were interested, but this summer they ended up signing Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea instead. Lately, reports emerged about Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain being interested as well.
The 28-year-old’s contract was set to expire after this season, and the negotiations about a new deal have stalled somewhat. In order to prevent the goalkeeper from being able to talk to clubs outside of England from January, United have decided to take up the option offered by the current deal to bind De Gea for a further 12 months.
The negotiations about a new deal are, however, still ongoing, and having him commit to another long-term contract would be an important achievement for the Red Devils at this point.
