United interested in Godin

Manchester United are interested in signing Diego Godin from Inter Milan this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The 20-time English champions performed a partial rebuilding job on their back line last year when they signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and broke the world’s transfer record by paying £80 million to Leicester City for Harry Maguire. They also sent Chris Smalling out to AS Roma on a season-long loan. Wan-Bissaka and Maguire joined Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw in what is now the first-choice defence for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, it seems they still aren’t quite happy with that and they want to make the competition for those places in the team stiffer. A potential arrival of 34-year-old Godin would certainly go a long way in that aspect. The Uruguay international spent nine years with Atletico Madrid and established himself as a world-class defender, before running down his contract and moving to Inter Milan last summer.

Having been drawn to Italy by the project Inter are currently undertaking, it remains to be seen whether he would want to jump ship so soon to be a part of something else, at a club unlikely to play in the Champions League next season.
