D.C. United named Rene Weiler as Troy Lesesne’s successor on Wednesday.

Lesesne parted ways with D.C. last week following their 5-2 defeat to Nashville SC in the U.S. Open Cup quarter-final.

That was a fifth match without a win in all competitions, a run which included a thumping 7-1 defeat to the Chicago Fire in MLS in early June.

D.C. are currently 13th in the Eastern Conference on 19 points, already 10 points behind Charlotte FC in the final playoff place.

“This is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase, and I believe strongly in the project taking shape here,” said Weiler.

“The foundation that has been put in place gives me real confidence in what we can build.

“There is important work ahead, but I’m excited to help lead D.C. United back to where it belongs, competing for championships.”

Weiler has not been in charge of a club since leaving Servette in June 2024, having delivered their first title in 20 years by winning the Swiss Cup.

Across his 20-year coaching career, he has also won the Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht and led Al Ahly to the Egyptian Premier League title.

Weiler has managed 413 league matches during his career, winning 205 of those across the eight clubs that he has managed (D96 L112).

At Servette, he oversaw 58 matches and averaged 1.6 points per game as he finished with a 41.2% win rate.

Kevin Flanagan will continue as interim head coach until Weiler’s arrival, with Charlotte next up for D.C. on Wednesday.
