Colorado Rapids 6-2 Houston Dynamo: Thompson and Navarro get braces in chaotic win

The Colorado Rapids maintained their strong start to the MLS season with a thumping 6-2 win over the Houston Dynamo, with both Kosi Thompson and Rafael Navarro scoring twice.

Matt Wells’ side remain unbeaten at home in 2026 after putting their struggling visitors to the sword, with a quick start setting the tone for the hosts at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Thompson got the scoring under way with a predatory back-post finish just five minutes into his Rapids debut, and Josh Atencio’s 18-yard drive made it 2-0 only 12 minutes later.

Colorado had to wait until early in the second half to get their third goal, which arrived when Thompson’s effort from outside the box took a massive deflection off Diadie Samassekou and squirmed beyond Jonathan Bond.

Houston got one back via Lawrence Ennali in the 69th minute, but Navarro’s first goal restored Colorado’s three-goal advantage almost immediately.

The final three goals all arrived in stoppage time, which began with Houston defender Felipe Andrade sliding into his own net.

Guilherme’s piledriver made it 5-2, but the Rapids had the final say with Navarro scoring from the penalty spot after Hector Herrera fouled Paxten Aaronson.

The Rapids sit sixth in the Western Conference with 12 points from seven games, with Saturday’s other matches bringing mixed results for the teams at the top.

Having rested Son-Heung min, Los Angeles FC suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to the Portland Timbers, for whom Kevin Kelsy scored a 96th-minute winner,

Elsewhere, the San Jose Earthquakes won 3-1 at Sporting Kansas City, and the table-topping Vancouver Whitecaps beat New York City 2-0.

Data Debrief: Colorado break new ground with big win

Colorado have now scored 19 goals in their first seven games of the season, surpassing their previous club record set in 1998, when they netted 15 times in their opening seven matches.

Following his recent move from Toronto FC, Thompson’s brace made him the third Rapids player to score twice on his debut for the club, after Raul Diaz Arce in 2001 and Marcelo Balboa in 1996.

And Navarro recorded his third and fourth goals of the season, taking him to 33 for the Rapids overall – the sixth-most of any player in the club’s history.
