Prediction: Poland vs Nigeria

Poland and Nigeria will meet in an international friendly at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw on Wednesday evening, with both nations looking to use the June window to reset after missing out on the 2026 World Cup.

The hosts will want a positive performance in front of their own supporters after a frustrating qualifying campaign, while Nigeria arrive in Europe with a reshaped squad and a useful chance to test their depth against strong opposition.

Poland

Poland enters this friendly still thinking about Viktor Gyokeres’ late goal that cost them World Cup qualification. In the meantime, they played another friendly game against Ukraine, and also fell short.

For a team that was built around Robert Lewandowski for more than a decade, missing the World Cup is a huge disappointment. They will look forward to the upcoming friendly matches and try to rebuild the squad and regain their momentum.

The White-Reds have enough attacking quality to cause Nigeria problems, especially at home. Lewandowski remains the obvious focal point, while Karol Swiderski, Jakub Kaminski, Piotr Zielinski and Sebastian Szymanski will support him in the quest to find Nigeria’s net.

The concern is at the other end. Poland has not looked secure enough defensively in recent matches, and that lack of control has made them vulnerable against teams with pace in transition. Nigeria may be missing some major attacking names, but the Super Eagles still have players capable of punishing loose spacing between Poland’s midfield and back line.

This fixture should also carry some significance for Poland. Their only previous meeting with Nigeria ended in a 1-0 friendly defeat in Wroclaw in 2018, and although that defeat came in a friendly match and didn’t carry much weight, we expect that Polish players remember that match and will try to avoid losing against Nigeria on home soil for the second time.

Team News

Robert Lewandowski is expected to be involved after confirming his availability for the June camp. His presence should give Poland an attacking boost, although we don’t expect the veteran striker to play the complete match.

Karol Swiderski is another option in the forward line and could either start alongside Lewandowski or be used from the bench. Poland also has wide and attacking midfield options in Jakub Kaminski, Michal Skoras and Sebastian Szymanski, while Piotr Zielinski should remain one of the main creative players in midfield if selected.

Jan Urban may use the game to test a few younger players, or footballers who didn’t have much playing time previously, especially with Poland needing to look beyond the old core. Oskar Pietuszewski and Karol Czubak are among the attacking names who could be given minutes if the match opens up in the second half.

Defensively, Poland is likely to keep an experienced structure rather than experiment too heavily from the start. The main question is whether the hosts can protect central areas well enough against Nigeria’s runners, particularly when possession is lost high up the pitch.

Nigeria

Nigeria arrives in Warsaw after a productive spell under Eric Chelle, even though their failure to qualify for the World Cup remains a major disappointment. The Super Eagles have enough talent to compete with strong European sides, but this friendly comes with a slightly different purpose because several leading players are unavailable.

The visitors recently won the Unity Cup in London, beating Jamaica 3-0 in the final, and that result should give the squad confidence. Even without their strongest attacking group, Nigeria have shown enough energy and directness to trouble opponents, especially when they can break quickly into open space.

The absences of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman change the structure of Nigeria’s attack. Osimhen gives the team elite penalty-box movement and physical presence, while Lookman provides creativity, finishing and one-vs-one threat from the wing. Without them, Nigeria may struggle to find players who can fill their boots.

Even so, the Super Eagles will certainly stay true to their style. Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Cyriel Dessers and Tolu Arokodare all offer different attacking profiles, and Nigeria’s pace on the break could make this a difficult evening for a Poland side that has not always looked comfortable defending transitions.

Team News

Nigeria are expected to be without Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman for the friendlies against Poland and Portugal. Osimhen has reportedly been excused amid a demanding club period and uncertainty around his future, while Lookman is also set to miss out after a long season.

Eric Chelle is therefore likely to lean on the wider squad. Cyriel Dessers, Tolu Arokodare and Kelechi Iheanacho are among the options who could be used centrally, while Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze can provide pace and width if selected.

Alex Iwobi should be important in midfield because of his ability to carry the ball and connect Nigeria’s deeper players with the attack. Wilfred Ndidi remains a key figure in midfield, especially in a match where Nigeria may need defensive discipline and quick recoveries after turnovers.

At the back, Nigeria are expected to keep a fairly strong defensive unit. Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi are among the names who could feature, with Stanley Nwabali likely to remain a strong option in goal.

Conclusion

Poland have the advantage of playing at home, and Lewandowski’s expected involvement gives them the clearest individual match-winner on the pitch. The hosts should create chances, especially if Zielinski and Szymanski are able to receive the ball between Nigeria’s midfield and defence.

However, Poland’s defensive vulnerability makes a clean sheet hard to reach. Nigeria may be missing Osimhen and Lookman, but the visitors still have pace, physicality and enough attacking variety to cause problems in transition.

This has the feel of a friendly where both managers will want to implement a system and establish a standard squad for the future, but to do that, they will have to give chances to lots of players and make many substitutions. Poland should have enough quality to score in Warsaw, while Nigeria’s forward options and counter-attacking threat make them capable of finding the net as well.
