A-League wrap: Mariners go top as Roar fall, Sydney down Jets

Central Coast Mariners stretched their unbeaten A-League run to eight games with a 2-1 victory over Brisbane Roar on Saturday.

First-half goals from Mustafa Amini and right-back Pedj Bojic did the damage for Graham Arnold’s men, who secured their fifth straight win and their first in the Queensland capital since 2009.

In contrast, Ange Postecoglou’s Brisbane outfit slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat, with the Mariners now three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Kofi Danning scored an 83rd-minute consolation for the Roar.

Meanwhile, Sydney FC came from behind to score a 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets in a tough derby at Ausgrid Stadium.

The Jets controlled play in the first half and deservedly took a 1-0 lead into the break after a crisp Jeremy Brockie volley in the 25th minute.

But Sydney showed more venom in the second half and equalised through Bruno Cazarine on the hour mark.

Sydney substitute Juho Makela completed a spirited comeback with a glancing header six minutes from full-time to give the Sky Blues the win.

The final A-League match on Saturday saw Melbourne Heart claim a dramatic 2-1 victory over Perth Glory thanks to an 87th-minute goal from Mate Dugandzic.

The match looked headed for a 1-1 draw after Matt Thompson’s 33rd-minute strike for Heart was cancelled out by an equally good finish from Billy Mehmet two minutes later.

Glory controlled most of the play in the second half but were caught out by Dugandzic, who nodded the ball home with three minutes remaining for Heart’s fifth win of the season, taking them back into third on the table ahead of Friday’s Melbourne derby clash with Victory.

For Perth, it was their sixth loss in the past eight games and sees them stay in seventh on the table.
