Sydney ended Brisbane Roar’s 36-match unbeaten run with a stunning 2-0 upset win at home in the A-League on Sunday.
Vitezslav Lavicka’s men stunned the visitors after just 36 seconds when teenage attacker Dimitri Petratos struck with a superb finish.
Australia international Brett Emerton doubled their advantage with a bending corner kick in the 19th minute at a blustery WIN Jubilee Oval.
Both sides had their chances in an entertaining second half but were unable to find the back of the net as Sydney recorded a rare victory over their northern rivals.
It is the Roar’s first loss since a 3-0 defeat to Melbourne Victory on September 12, 2010.
Despite the loss, Ange Postecoglou’s men remain three points clear on top, while Sydney’s first victory in three matches lifts them to third.
Elsewhere, top-flight football returned to LaTrobe City Stadium for first time in 10 years as Melbourne Heart recorded a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix.
Forward Mate Dugandzic scored what proved to be the winner four minutes before half-time in Morwell, netting on the rebound after Rutger Worm’s shot hit the post.
The Phoenix will feel aggrieved they are not returning across the Tasman with at least a point after squandering several chances to equalise in a match during which the woodwork was struck four times.
Heart held on to climb into the top six courtesy of their third win of the season, while the Phoenix are eighth.
