Bruno Fernandes is well worthy of holding a key place in Manchester United’s history, so says Ruben Amorim.

Fernandes made his 200th Premier League appearance for United on Saturday, and marked it by scoring his 100th goal for the club in all competitions.

The Portugal international, who joined United from Sporting CP in January 2020, prodded home in the 14th minute of a topsy-turvy clash with Chelsea, in which both teams were reduced to 10 men and the Red Devils came out 2-1 victors.

Fernandes is the fifth player to score on his 200th Premier League appearance for United, after Denis Irwin, Phil Neville, Wayne Rooney and Antonio Valencia.

“That guy deserves to be in the history of our club, not just for what he does but for what his team conquers,” Amorim said of Fernandes.

“He deserves all the praise.

“The most important thing is the influence he has on the squad.

“Sometimes he’s not in the best position to be the main man in every game, but the point of the captain is to be the best he can be in every situation to help the team to be better. He’s doing that.”

Fernandes leads the Premier League this season for chances created (15), while only Everton’s Jack Grealish (12) has crafted more opportunities from open play than the United captain’s 11.

The 31-year-old also tops the competition for open-play shot-ending sequence involvements, with his tally of 35 at least five clear of any other player.

Amorim, though, thinks there is more to come from Fernandes.

“I think he can play better,” Amorim added. “But everyone can play better in our team.”

United’s victory over Chelsea means they have won consecutive home league games within the same season, under the same boss for the first time since December 2023, under Erik ten Hag, with the second game in that run also coming against the Blues.
