Andrich admits Alonso speculation is affecting Leverkusen players

Robert Andrich admits speculation linking Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso with Real Madrid is affecting the Bundesliga champions on the pitch.

It appears to be a matter of time before Leverkusen lose their German crown to Bayern Munich, who beat Mainz 3-0 on Saturday to inch closer to the title.

Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-0 to delay Bayern’s coronation, but one more win for Vincent Kompany’s team – who visit RB Leipzig next week – will secure the crown.

Many expect this season to be Leverkusen’s last under Alonso, with the former midfielder being touted as a possible replacement for Carlo Ancelotti at Madrid.

And Germany international Andrich says it is difficult for the team to ignore the noise surrounding the coach who led them to an unbeaten domestic campaign last term.

“I have to say that it’s very loud around the team overall, and you notice that as a player,” Andrich told Sky Sports in Germany after Saturday’s match.

“I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect us because it’s obvious that he either stays or goes. We’ll just let ourselves be surprised and then we’ll see.”

Managing sporting director Simon Rolfes, meanwhile, believes everyone at the club would benefit from a decision being made on the Spaniard’s future.

“Basically, the job is always to prepare for many eventualities,” Rolfes said. “Clarity always helps in life.

“We don’t have that right now, but we will, and then we’ll move forward. There’s no doubt clarity would be good for everyone. We’re all aware of that, and Xabi is aware as well.”

Patrik Schick and Emiliano Buendia were on target at the BayArena on Saturday, with Alonso content with a much-improved performance after two straight draws.

“It was a better game for us, with better energy and more self-belief,” Alonso said at his post-match press conference.

“We were solid and focused and I’m satisfied with this game. We’ll use this feeling for the next three games.”
