Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Women’s Super League with a 1-0 win over Brighton at the Emirates Stadium.

A 15th-minute own goal from Marisa Olislagers was enough to hand the Gunners all three points, after an Olivia Smith effort was inadvertently turned in by the defender’s flailing leg, stabbing it beyond the wrong-footed Chiamaka Nnadozie in the Seagulls’ goal.

The hosts continued to dominate possession after opening the scoring, but were denied by some sublime saves from Nnadozie, and were almost left to rue their profligacy when Daphne van Domselaar was forced to stop Kiko Seike from close range in the 37th minute.

After the break, Renee Slegers’ side went agonisingly close to doubling their lead as Smith and Frida Maanum both saw their efforts cleared off the Brighton line.

On the hour mark, Carla Camacho tested Van Domselaar’s reflexes with a goal-bound header, in what was the visitors’ best chance of the game.

Following a lengthy stoppage in play, which saw Maelys Mpome go down with a suspected head injury, Stina Blackstenius rattled the crossbar when she met the end of Katie McCabe’s corner with a glancing header.

While Blackstenius was presented with another golden opportunity in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, she sent the resulting effort trickling past the post.

Sunday’s victory sees Arsenal jump above Brighton into sixth on eight points, with Brighton sitting in seventh, a point off the Gunners.

Data Debrief: Caldentey stars as Arsenal bounce back

Once again, Mariona Caldentey was instrumental for the Gunners, with the central midfielder ranking highest for accurate passes (63), passes in the final third (37),

She was also joint-highest for chances created (three) before making way for Blackstenius in the 64th minute.

Arsenal have now avoided defeat in their last 24 matches when scoring first in the WSL, since a 1-2 loss to West Ham in February 2024.

And most importantly, Slegers’ side snapped a five-game winless streak in all competitions (D2 L3), with this just their second clean sheet of the campaign.
