Bayern Munich put one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals as Michael Olise starred for the Bundesliga leaders in their 6-1 first-leg victory over Atalanta in the last 16.
Olise scored twice and grabbed an assist as Bayern ran riot at New Balance Arena, with Josip Stanisic, Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala also on target.
Vincent Kompany’s side needed just 12 minutes to open the scoring when they caught Atalanta napping from a short corner, with Gnabry laying the ball on a plate for Stanisic to tuck beyond Marco Carnesecchi from inside the six-yard box.
Bayern doubled their lead 10 minutes later through Olise, who brilliantly cut inside from the right-hand side before bending a delicious, curling effort into the bottom-left corner.
Gnabry then got himself on the scoresheet in the 25th minute to put the result beyond doubt, with the Bayern number seven lifting the ball over the on-rushing Carnesecchi after being played in behind the Atalanta defence by Olise.
And it took only seven minutes after the restart for Bayern to pull further clear as Jackson rounded off a blistering counter with a well-taken finish after Nicola Zalewski’s blocked free-kick.
Olise then sensationally curled the visitors further in front just after the hour before substitute Musiala tucked the ball home in the 67th minute after being picked out by Jackson’s teasing cross into the area.
Atalanta would, however, get themselves on the scoresheet in the third minute of second-half stoppage time through Mario Pasalic, who slid in to poke the ball into the net after Nikola Krstovic saw his initial effort saved by Jonas Urbig.

Data Debrief: Brilliant Bayern hit six of the best
Bayern were among the favourites to win the Champions League this season, and they did their chances no harm here as they netted at least six goals in an away European knockout round match for just the second time in history, after beating Legia Warsaw 7-3 in the UEFA Cup First Round in October 1988.
And they were helped on their way by the brilliant Olise, who became just the second French midfielder in Champions League history to record at least seven goal involvements in successive campaigns, after Zinedine Zidane in 1996-97 and 1997-98.
In addition, since the Club World Cup, only Harry Kane (50) and Kylian Mbappe (43) have recorded more goal involvements in all competitions this season among Europe’s top five leagues than Olise (37 –15 goals, 22 assists).
But away from Olise’s stunning display, Bayern were deserving victors in Bergamo. They registered an expected goals (xG) total of 4.58 from their 25 shots to Atalanta’s 1.68 from their 11 attempts. In the first half, Kompany’s side also generated a non-penalty xG total of 2.97 – their biggest since their 3.15 vs Basel in March 2012.
