Former Ghana FA head Ben Koufie has tipped midfielder Andre Ayew to win the 2011 African Footballer of the Year award.

Koufie told Accra-based radio station Citi FM that the Marseille youngster has done enough over the years to clinch the prestigious prize.

The 22-year-old is contesting with Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure and Seydou Keita of Mali.

“I think he’s a sure candidate for the award judging from what he has done over the period,” Koufie said.

“If you look at his performance from the youth level through to the senior team, he has been consistent and so if he wins it won’t be a surprise to anyone.”

“His displays for his club side have also been magnificent. He recently won the BBC award and if that award is exclusively chosen by fans, then you should imagine what they think of him.”

“He deserves the accolade and so we should all pray for him to clinch it.”

Ayew’s father, Abedi Pele, is a three-time winner of the coveted award.
