Barcelona booked their spot in the final of the Supercopa de Espana with a 5-0 thumping of Athletic Club in Saudi Arabia.

Raphinha, Fermin Lopez and Roony Bardghji all directly contributed to three goals, while Ferran Torres also got on the scoresheet as the Blaugrana all but secured the win in the first half.

For all their quality, Barca took the lead in unorthodox fashion. Fermin skewed a shot from Bardghji’s pass, but it fell nicely for Torres, who managed to divert the ball goalwards and past Unai Simon.

Then came an onslaught on Hansi Flick’s side, who scored three times in eight minutes. Fermin doubled Barca’s advantage when he turned home Raphinha’s centre before Bardghji saw his strike creep over the line following Simon’s initial save.

Raphinha then got in on the act before and after the break, first lashing home at the near post and then smashing in Barca’s fifth in the 52nd minute following a lay-off from Bardghji.

Athletic had a chance to salvage some pride in the 77th minute when Unai Gomez raced through on goal, but the substitute failed to hit the target while one-on-one with Joan Garcia, which summed up their performance.

Data Debrief: Historic win for Barca

There was not much to separate the two sides in terms of expected goals (xG), with Barca producing 2.09 from 13 shots to Athletic’s 1.76 from nine attempts, but only one team took their chances.

Barca, who also finished with 80% of possession, recorded the biggest win by any team in a single match in the Supercopa de Espana.

It was also the first time three different players have been involved in three goals in the competition since at least 2010-11 in Fermin (one goal and two assists), Raphinha (two goals and one assist) and Bardghji (one goal and two assists).
