Hoping to find a route back into the AFC Champions League spots on Friday morning, Adelaide will welcome Macarthur to Coopers Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, while Adelaide might have spent the whole of last season battling it out at the foot of the A-League table, Carl Veart’s side have come roaring back in a sensational fashion this time around. In fact, the Reds open Friday’s showdown sat just two points adrift of finding a route into the AFC Champions League spots. However, although they might have continued to break a string of records this year, the one-time Sheffield United striker is desperately searching for some recent stability. Missing out on what they had billed as a golden opportunity last week as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate at home against Brisbane, Adelaide have collected just a pair of points from any of their last four A-League appearances. Likewise, Veart’s men have registered just a sole victory from any of their previous seven consecutive outings – a run that stems back to a 3-2 win against Melbourne Victory on January 18th. With their recent issues underlined by a 4-1 drumming against Sydney on February 1st, Adelaide have shown some extended defensive issues. Friday’s hosts have notched just a single A-League clean sheet since a 4-0 romp against Central Coast on December 13th.
As for the visitors, while Macarthur might have enjoyed a real flurry on either side of opening the New Year, Mile Sterjovski’s side have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Putting in another downbeat display last week as they slumped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Melbourne City, the Bulls have come tumbling down the A-League standings. Now facing a major uphill battle in the race to book another play-off ticket, Friday’s guests have continued to show some glaring issues since the end of January. Getting March underway with a routine 2-0 defeat at home against Sydney, Macarthur have lost all of their previous three A-League appearances by an aggregate score of 6-1. In fact, on what has become quite the rut, the one-time Lille striker has seen his squad put just a single point on the board from any of their last five consecutive outings. It should also be highlighted, Macarthur have lost each of their previous three straight A-League showdowns away from the Campbelltown Stadium.
