Looking to take another giant leap towards booking a lucrative Champions League ticket, Villarreal will travel to Alaves on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Alaves might have eventually dragged themselves over the finishing line last season as they clung to their La Liga status, Quique Sanchez Flores finds his squad at the heart of yet another relegation scrap. Last seen falling to an action-packed 3-2 defeat away at Valencia, the one-time Watford boss finds his squad regarded as a standout relegation candidate in 2026. Signing off February with a nightmare 2-0 loss against Levante, the Blues have failed to win any of their previous six showdowns against La Liga opposition across all competitions (four defeats, two draws). Likewise, watching their Copa del Rey adventure come to a dramatic end on February 4th as they slumped to another 3-2 loss at home against Real Sociedad, Friday’s guests have also continued to show some worrying defensive struggles this season. Along with shipping at least a pair of goals in five of those six consecutive appearances, Alaves have also failed to muster a single La Liga clean sheet since the start of December.
As for the visitors, while Villarreal might have endured a public European struggle this season, the Yellow Submarine have embarked on a stunning domestic flurry. Last seen making an immediate return to winning ways as they secured a 2-1 victory at home against Elche, Marcelino’s men are cruising their way to a top-four finish among Spain’s elite. In fact, despite signing off February with a routine 4-1 loss away at reigning La Liga champions Barcelona, Villarreal have won each of their other three top-flight battles. Pencilled in as a stanly contender this weekend, the former Marseille boss will also be excited by his reverse meeting against Friday’s hosts. Landing a thumping 3-1 victory when they welcomed Alaves to the Estadio de la Ceramica on January 10th, Villarreal will be seeking a repeat display here. However, it should be noted, the Yellow Submarine have notched just a sole win from any of their last six straight matchups on the road – a run that stems back to a 3-1 victory against Elche on January 3rd.
