Hoping to extend their buffer at the top of the Western Conference standings, San Diego will travel to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday night when they meet Atlanta.
Starting with the hosts, making an immediate return to losing ways last time out as they marked their return from September’s international break with a rollercoaster 5-4 defeat at home against Columbus, Atlanta have once again come under serious scrutiny this season. Scrapping it out at the foot of the Eastern Conference standings, the Five Stripes should be bracing themselves for another stern examination here. Failing to book a Leagues Cup knockout stage ticket last month, Ronny Delia has a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. With their extended struggles highlighted by a 3-1 loss at the hands of Colorado on August 17th, Atlanta have remarkably mustered just a single win from any of their previous 13 consecutive MLS appearances. With that rut stemming all the way back to the end of May, Saturday’s hosts have also continued to show some major defensive issues this season. In fact, Delia’s struggling squad have recorded just a sole MLS clean sheet in front of their own supporters since the start of March.
As for the visitors, while San Diego might have only made their MLS debut this season, Mikey Varas’ men have enjoyed a sensational maiden campaign among America’s elite. Despite falling to a 3-1 defeat at home against Minnesota last time out, the California-based outfit are still leading the chase at the top of the Western Conference standings and they have rightfully received a string of plaudits. Heading into September’s international break with a stellar 2-1 victory away at Los Angeles, the former Dallas coach has seen his squad suffer just a single loss from any of their last seven consecutive MLS appearances. Smelling the chance to claim an immediate response this weekend, Saturday’s guests will also be hugely excited by their dominant success on the road. Including another 2-1 win against San Jose last month, Varas’ camp have won all of their previous four consecutive showdowns away from the Snapdragon Stadium by an aggregate score of 8-2.
