Competition: WSL
Market: Chelsea W win
Odds: 7/10 @ BetUS
In what is a heavyweight WSL showdown on Friday night, Chelsea will welcome Manchester City to Stamford Bridge.
Starting with the hosts, making real history last season as they stormed their way to a record-breaking sixth consecutive WSL crown, Chelsea are simply looking to carry on from where they left off prior to the summer break. Crowned FA Cup champions on May 18th as they cruised their way to a routine 3-0 victory against Manchester United, the Blues are pencilled in as a real contender to complete another domestic sweep this time around. Signing off their summer preparations with an eye-catching 4-1 win against Italian giants AC Milan, Sonia Bompastor’s side will be looking to make an opening weekend statement here. Finishing the 2024/25 campaign holding a commanding 12-point buffer at the top of the table, Chelsea also gained a fearsome reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third. Notching 56 goals in their 22 WSL showdowns, Bompastor’s camp held the second-best attacking record. It should also be noted, the reigning WSL champions have suffered just a single competitive defeat in west London since April 2024.
As for the visitors, left frustrated last season as they eventually had to settle for a fourth-place finish among England’s elite, Manchester City are seeking some crucial stability this time around. Despite signing off the 2024/25 campaign with an action-packed 5-2 victory against Crystal Palace, Andree Jeglertz’s side won just a trio of their final eight appearances across all competitions and they also failed to register consecutive victories since the start of March. Suffering FA Cup heartbreak on April 13th as they fell to a 2-0 loss at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester United, the Sky Blues also know the importance of finding some defensive steel. Facing what is a heavyweight challenge here, Man City should also be worried by a nightmare record against the defending champions. Including a 3-0 drumming in their most recent showdown against Chelsea on March 27th, Jeglertz’s side have lost five of their previous six meetings against Chelsea across all competitions.
