Competition: Irish Premier Division
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 11/10 @ Pribet
Two sides who find themselves at the heart of their own respective European chases, Drogheda will welcome Derry City to County Louth on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, managing to make a much-welcomed return to winning ways last week as they clinched a 2-1 victory at home against defending champions Shelbourne, Kevin Doherty’s men must find a way to use that performance as a platform to build on. Although the Dogs might open Friday’s showdown knowing that they can move within touching distance of the European spots, the County Louth-based outfit have struggled to find any real stability on either side of September’s international break. Watching their FAI Cup adventure come to an end earlier in the month as as they suffered penalty shootout heartbreak at home against Irish giants Shamrock Rovers, Drogheda have claimed just a single win from any of their previous seven appearances across all competitions within 90 minutes. Facing what looks set to be a must-win showdown this weekend, it should also be highlighted that Doherty’s side have mustered just a single home victory against top-flight opposition since the start of July.
As for the visitors, eventually falling short in the race to book a lucrative European ticket last season, Derry City are desperate to go one-step further this time around. Opening Friday’s showdown sat in bronze medal position among Ireland’s elite, Tiernan Lynch’s side will be desperate to widen their advantage here. Despite being last seen on home soil settling for a 1-1 stalemate at home against Shelbourne, the Candystripes are unbeaten in all of their previous five consecutive Premier Division appearances. Marking their return from September’s international break with an action-packed 4-3 victory away at Bohemians, Derry will also be excited by their continued success on the road. Including a 2-1 win against Galway last month, Lynch’s side have won three of their previous four away fixtures across all competitions. However, it should be noted, with the European contenders seeing all of their last five straight matchups finish with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
