Two sides who already find themselves scrapping it out at opposite ends of the Championship table, Leicester will travel to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday lunchtime when they meet Oxford United.
Starting with the hosts, while Oxford might have eventually clung to their Championship status last season, it appears that Gary Rowett’s side have a real battle on their hands this time around. Marking their return from September’s international break sat in the drop zone, the former Millwall boss finds his squad pencilled in as a standout relegation contender. Managing to put just a single point on the board from any of their first four Championship appearances, the Yellows have come under some serious scrutiny. Watching their EFL Cup adventure come to a thumping end on August 27th as they slumped to a woeful 6-0 drumming at the hands of Brighton, Oxford have also shown some worrying defensive struggles. Despite heading into September’s fortnight interval with an action-packed 2-2 stalemate at home against Coventry, Rowett’s men have shipped 12 goals in their last four matchups across all competitions and they have also recorded just a single clean sheet against Championship opposition since the middle of April.
As for the visitors, sacrificing their Premier League status with a whimper last season as they were hit with an immediate Championship return, Leicester are still dealing with a string of issues behind the scenes. Getting proceedings underway with a dramatic 2-1 victory at home against Sheffield Wednesday, Marti Cifuentes’ side have enjoyed a largely bright start to proceedings. Despite suffering a shock EFL Cup exit away at League One outfit Huddersfield on August 13th, the former QPR boss has seen his squad win three of their first four Championship showdowns. Last seen heading into September’s international break with a rugged 2-0 win against potential play-off contenders Birmingham, Leicester will be desperate to carry on from where they left off prior to the fortnight interval. Smelling a potential opportunity on Saturday lunchtime, it’s also worth highlighting that the Foxes secured a 2-1 win when they last travelled to the Kassam Stadium back in 2016.
