Competition: MLS
Market: Philadelphia Union win
Odds: 8/11 @ Pribet
Two sides who find the moods in their respective camps at a polar opposite, Philadelphia will welcome LA Galaxy to Sabaru Park in the early hours on Thursday.
Starting with the hosts, while Philadelphia might have suffered last-gasp heartbreak at home against Columbus last week as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate against Columbus, the Union have enjoyed a bright start to proceedings. Scrapping it out at the top of the Eastern Conference table, Bradley Carnell’s men sit just two points adrift of climbing to the top of the standings. Making a string of improvements since opening up the new campaign, the former St. Louis City boss should find the mood in his camp at a real high. Getting May underway underway with a 2-1 victory away at Montreal, Philadelphia have registered 10 points from their previous four MLS appearances and they will be confident of collecting another scalp here. Likewise, extending on their US Open Cup adventure earlier in the month as they edged past Indy Eleven, Thursday’s hosts have suffered just a single defeat from any of their previous seven matchups across all competitions. It should also be noted, Carnell’s side have suffered just a sole defeat at Sabaru Park since way back in August.
As for the visitors, enduring what has quickly become a public crisis, LA Galaxy find themselves at the heart of a nightmare. Putting in what was a woeful performance last weekend as they slumped to a 7-0 drumming at the hands of New York Red Bulls, the pressure on Greg Vanney’s shoulders has now reached a boiling point. Remarkably sat rock-bottom of the Western Conference standings, the former Toronto boss has seen his squad muster just three points from any of their first 12 MLS appearances. In fact, signing off April with a 4-2 defeat at home against Portland, LA Galaxy have lost their last four consecutive outings by an aggregate score 13-2. Watching their CONCACAF Champions League adventure come to an end on April 9th as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Mexican outfit Tigres, Los Angeles will be bracing themselves for another monumental challenge here. Given what has been a huge recent gulf in class between Thursday’s opponents, we are backing a home victory in midweek.
