Competition: Chinese Super League
Market: Shanghai Port win
Odds: 3/4 @ BetUS
Hoping to find a route into the AFC Champions League spots on Monday lunchtime, Shanghai will travel to Shenzhen Xingpengcheng.
Starting with the hosts, after only just clinging to their Super League status last season, Shenzhen are desperately hoping for a smoother ride this time around. However, last seen putting in what was a woeful display as they slumped to a 5-0 drumming at the hands of Chengdu Rongcheng, Christian Lattanzio’s side are once again looking over their shoulder at another looming relegation scrap. Suffering FA Cup heartbreak on May 21st as they slumped out against second-tier outfit Guangdong, the former Charlotte boss certainly has some real pressure on his shoulders. Including a 2-1 loss at home against Wuhan Three Towns on June 18th, Shenzhen have lost four of their last five appearances across all competitions. Facing what will certainly be another stern examination on Monday afternoon, Lattanzio’s men have also recorded just a single victory since back on May 1st. It should also be noted, the Blues have lost all of their three historic showdowns against Shanghai by an aggregate score of 11-1.
As for the visitors, successfully retaining their Super League crown last season, Shanghai are looking to break even more records this time around. However, opening Monday’s matchup sat seven points adrift of top spot, Kevin Muscat’s men know the importance of making up some ground here. Putting in what was a dominant display las time out as they cruised their way to a 3-0 romp at home against Dalian Yingbo, the Red Eagles are enjoying a recent Super League purple patch. Including a 3-1 victory against Henan Songshan earlier in the month, Shanghai are unbeaten in all of their previous six top-flight appearances. Finding what has been a real clinical edge in the final third, Muscat’s camp have also impressed with their recent success away from the Pudong Football Stadium. Not tasting a single defeat on their travels since the start of March, the former Melbourne Victory boss should be smelling a real opportunity here.
