In what is a showdown between two A-League giants this weekend, Sydney will welcome Melbourne Victory to the Allianz Stadium on Saturday morning.

Starting with the hosts, enduring what was a real A-League rut last season as they eventually had to settle for a bottom-half finish among Australia’s elite, Sydney have plenty of exceptions on their shoulders this time around. Nevertheless, despite opening up the 2025/26 campaign with a worrying 2-1 loss away at Adelaide on October 17th, Ufuk Talay’s men have come roaring back in a stellar fashion. Last seen heading into November’s international break with a routine 2-0 victory at home against Macarthur, Sydney sit just one-point adrift of climbing to the top of the table. Getting November underway with a season-best display as they cruised their way to an empathic 4-1 romp against Newcastle, the Sky Blues have now won all of their previous three consecutive A-League appearances by an aggregate score of 8-1. Finding a clinical edge in the final third prior to the fortnight interval, Talay’s side will be confident of making another statement here.

As for the visitors, suffering major grand final heartbreak over the summer as they eventually fell to a 1-0 loss at the hands of bitter local foes Melbourne City, the Victory have shown some real signs of a hangover since opening up the new campaign. Claiming just a single A-League victory from any of their first four attempts, Arthur Diles’ men have the feel of a squad who are searching for a much-welcomed morale boost. Coming under real scrutiny last month as they slumped to a 5-2 drumming against Newcastle, the Boys in Blue have also shown some real inconsistencies at both ends of the pitch. Last seen heading into November’s international break with a routine 2-0 defeat at home against their arch-rivals, Diles’ camp should also be concerned by their most recent trip to Sydney. Falling to a 3-0 loss when they last travelled to the Allianz Stadium back in December 2024, we are expecting a similar outcome.
