Competition: Brazil Serie B
Market: Both teams to score – No
Odds: 7/10 @ Pribet
Two sides who find themselves scrapping it out at opposite ends of the Serie B table, Criciuma will travel to Rio de Janeiro when they meet Volta Redonda late on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, making what was a much-welcomed return to winning ways last time out as they snatched a 2-1 victory away at Paysandu, Volta Redonda will be desperate to use that boost as a platform to build on. However, despite only making their Serie B return this year, Rogerio Correa’s side have a real battle on their hands in the race to keep hold of their second-tier status. Getting Friday’s showdown underway sat two points adrift in the relegation zone, the former CSA boss has seen his squad muster just a single victory from any of their previous six appearances – a run that stems back to July 27th. Likewise, last seen in Rio de Janeiro getting hit with a toothless 2-0 defeat against Athletic Club on August 31st, Volta Redonda have suffered consecutive Serie B losses in front of their own supporters. It should also be noted, Friday’s hosts have not recorded a single home strike in over 300 minutes of action.
As for the visitors, although Criciuma might have lost their Serie B status last season, the Tigers have their sights firmly set on securing an immediate top-flight return. Last seen putting in another dominant performance as they clinched a 2-0 victory against Chapecoense, Eduardo Baptista’s men are enjoying what has become a stellar purple patch. Signing off August with a 1-0 win away at Remo, Friday’s guests have won their previous three consecutive appearances by an aggregate score of 5-0. In fact, the promotion contenders have also registered 13 points from their last five Serie B showdowns. Getting this weekend’s fixtures underway knowing that they can move within touching distance of top-spot, Criciuma will be looking to make another statement here. It should also be highlighted, along with recording three clean sheets on the bounce, Baptista’s camp have shipped just 21 Serie B strikes this season and hold the second-best defensive tally among Brazil’s second-tier.
