Competition: A-League
Market: Western United win
Odds: 19/20 @ BetUS
Two camps who get their respective play-off adventures underway on Friday morning, Western United will welcome Adelaide to Ironbark Fields.
Starting with the hosts, while Western United might have fallen just one-point adrift of booking a famous AFC Champions League finish, John Aloisi’s men firmly cemented their spot as one of Australia’s ultimate surprise packages this season. Signing off their regular-campaign with a sensational 4-2 win against newly-crowned champions Auckland, the Tarneit-based outfit should find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Marking their return from March’s international break with a 3-1 victory against Perth, the former Brisbane boss has seen his squad win seven of their previous nine A-League appearances. With that purple patch stemming back to the middle of February, Western United have also gained a fearsome reputation for their dominance on home soil. Including a 4-1 romp against Wellington on March 8th, Friday’s hosts have won each of their last five straight showdowns at Ironbark Fields by an aggregate score of 15-4. It should also be highlighted, Aloisi’s men have suffered just a single defeat in front of their own supporters since the start of December.
As for the visitors, while Adelaide might have opened the New Year in the midst of a record-breaking romp, the Reds have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Despite securing an action-packed 3-2 victory against Wellington last month, that is the only win that Carl Veart’s side have collected from any of their previous 11 consecutive appearances – a rut that stems all the way back to February 7th. Marking their return from March’s international break with a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Melbourne Victory, Adelaide have also shown some real issues away from Coopers Stadium. Including a pair of 4-1 losses against Perth and Sydney, Friday’s guests claimed just three points from their final seven A-League contests on the road. It should also be noted, Veart’s men slumped to a routine 3-0 defeat when they travelled to Western United back on February 23rd. Given what has been a huge recent gulf in class, we are backing a home victory this weekend.
