Vasco da Gama manager Cristovao Borges has paid tribute to Brazilian Serie A champions Corinthians.

Vasco finished two points behind the league winners on a dramatic final round of league action on Sunday, in which Corinthians could only draw 0-0 with Palmeiras.

But that was enough for the title winners with Vasco also only managing a point in a 1-1 stalemate against Flamengo.

“I’m very happy with what Vasco have achieved,” Borges said.

“As for Corinthians, I think they deserve to be champions. Corinthians were the team that led the Championship for most of the season.”

“Corinthians are great champions, considering all that they did, for all that they strived for and with what took place today. Congratulations to Corinthians.”

Vasco, who have not won the title since 2000, enjoyed a successful season in which they also claimed the Brazilian Cup.

And Borges was proud of his side’s efforts over the course of the season.

“Even though we didn’t win the title, the Vasco players deserve congratulations,” he said.

“They gave a great show, played great games and they gave what everyone has come to expect of Vasco. I think that this season Vasco have made a great contribution to football.”
