Borussia Moenchengladbach kept their hopes of automatic Champions League qualification alive with a 3-0 win over Cologne in the Bundesliga.

The hosts dominated proceedings in the first half in a one-sided derby, but were only a goal to the good at the break thanks to Juan Arango’s strike in the 19th minute.

After the restart, Tony Jantschke and Marco Reus found the net within two minutes to give their side a comfortable victory over their relegation-threatened opponents.

This result puts ‘Gladbach a point behind Schalke, who currently sit in third place, while Cologne’s struggle for survival took another hit as Frank Schaefer’s men now languish four points behind Augsburg.

Freiburg all but secured their safety after a dour goalless draw with Hoffenheim.

The hosts had two shots on target all game, while Hoffenheim managed none in one of the more forgettable fixtures this season.

The point means Freiburg need just one more to mathematically ensure safety while for Hoffenheim their hopes of a Europa League place were done few favours.
