Sudan pulled off a stunning upset in the CECAFA Cup quarter-finals on Monday, defeating Burundi 2-0 in Dar es Salaam.
Sudan are the only country in east Africa to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and their muted performances in the group stages worried fans, but they looked rejuvenated when they tamed the Swallows who were seen as a main contender when the competition started.
Fielding an inexperienced line-up, Sudan employed a defensive system which saw them defending deep and restricting space for Burundi, while capitalising on counterattacks.
Their tactics paid off in the 69th minute when Muawia Bashir Koko scored, before Nagmelin Abdallah made it impossible for Burundi as he gave Sudan a second and final goal.
Sudan will now face Rwanda in the semi-finals after they defeated Zanzibar 2-1 in Monday’s other last-eight match.
