Chelsea´s show of character delights Bompastor

Chelsea’s character was the most pleasing part of their 4-0 hammering of Paris FC, so says Sonia Bompastor.

The Blues claimed their first Women’s Champions League win of the campaign in emphatic fashion on Wednesday.

Sandy Baltimore, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Alyssa Thompson and Erin Cuthbert were all on target by the 63rd minute.

Chelsea’s triumph in Europe followed on from a hard-fought 1-0 win over Tottenham in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. The Blues had drawn their previous two games, and though disappointed by the performances in those matches, Bompastor has been thrilled by her team’s reaction.

“The most important [thing] is the character we have shown in the last two games,” she said, as quoted by Chelsea’s official website.

“I’m very open with my players. I will always protect them in public, but when I have to analyse the game, and we haven’t performed at our best level, I’m quite direct and honest with them.

“When I tell them something didn’t work, I’ll also make sure I’m the one who is giving them simple things to achieve, and for that reason, they maybe think, ‘okay, Sonia is with us, we didn’t have the best performance, but we are all together’.

“I’m really pleased with the reaction we showed on the pitch during the last two games. I think in both games we were the better team.

“We created a lot. We couldn’t score more than one goal at the weekend, but at least we created a lot of chances, and if we stay at that level, we’ll be in a better place in the future.”

With Chelsea in control by half-time, Bompastor was also able to rotate her squad in the second half, with Sam Kerr – who is making her return from a long injury lay-off – able to get some vital minutes in the tank.

Bompastor added: “We have been talking with Sam about her getting some minutes.

“That’s always a challenge because when you have a player who has been out for so long, you need to allow her to get minutes, but at the same time, it’s not easy when the games are tight and the physicality is high. That’s even if we know the quality and experience Sam brings.”

Chelsea are now not in action until November 1, when they host London City Lionesses in the WSL.
