Universidad de Chile have claimed the 2011 Copa Sudamericana title after a 4-0 aggregate win against LDU Quito.
A 1-0 away win in Ecuador handed the Chileans the advantage for the second leg and they won it in style with a 3-0 second-leg success on Wednesday.
The Estadio Santa Laura-Universidad SEK crowd was in full voice after just three minutes when Eduardo Vargas – who scored the only goal in the first leg – put Universidad de Chile in front.
They carried that 2-0 aggregate lead into the break before they finally put the match to bed with 10 minutes to go in a card-littered second half.
The visitors had defender Jorge Guagua given a straight red card with 22 minutes left, which had practically sealed the match, but Argentine substitute Gustavo Lorenzetti put the result beyond doubt with his late strike.
And despite having a man of their own sent off when Matias Rodriguez received a second yellow card, Universidad de Chile rubbed salt into the visitors’ wound when Vargas scored again with three minutes to play.
His goal kick-started the celebrations as the club that was founded in 1927 won their first ever Copa Sudamericana crown.
