With plenty of raised eyebrows across the continent back in the summer of 2024 as Scott McTominay completed a £25million move to Napoli, not even the Scottish international could have imagined the impact he would make among Italy’s elite.

Embarking on what has been a sensational rise to superstardom over the past 18 months, McTominay has only gone from strength to strength since deciding to leave Manchester United.

Set to play a leading role for Scotland at this summer’s World Cup, it also appears that the 29-year-old could have a huge decision to make before jetting off to North America.

While Napoli’s hierarchy might have made it abundantly clear that they want to tie their midfield talisman down to a bumper new deal at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, reports over the past week have suggested that United are desperate to bring back their former academy graduate this summer.

With Michael Carrick reportedly eyeing the Scottish poster boy as Casemiro’s perfect replacement ahead of the 202627 campaign, McTominay certainly has a potential career-defining decision on the horizon.

McTominay – A modern era icon in Naples

Eventually leaving Old Trafford back in the summer of 2024 for a fee reportedly in the region of £25million, few would have expected that the 67-cap international would end up in Naples.

However, embarking on an iconic rise and now rightfully regarded as one of Europe’s top midfield stars, McTominay’s rise to superstardom has been nothing short of remarkable.

Firing Napoli to an iconic fourth Serie A crown last season and only further underlining his status as a modern era icon at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, the former Man United starlet certainly finds his stock at a red-hot high.

Along with registering four Champions League strikes during Napoli’s nightmare European group stage campaign, McTominay has registered 16 direct goal contributions for club and country so far this season (11 goals, five assists).

In fact, shattering a string of records during his maiden campaign under Antonio Conte’s guidance last season, Napoli’s midfield talisman also secured an 18th-place finish in the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Although the Azzurri might have accepted that they will relinquish their famous fourth Serie A crown this season, the Napoli hierarchy are desperate to get the 29-year-old tied down to a bumper new deal.

United looking to tempt their former starlet back to Manchester

While Napoli might have made it abundantly clear to McTominay and his representatives that they are eager to agree on a contract extension before their midfield star heads of to this summer’s World Cup, reports in Italy have suggested that United are keeping close tabs on proceedings.

Although it might have appeared 18 months ago that United were eager to push their former academy graduate out of the Old Trafford exit, the Premier League heavyweights are now keen on a speedy reunion.

McTominay, who debuted for United in 2017 and made 255 club appearances under four permanent managers, made it clear prior to his move in the summer of 2024 that he was eager to fight for his spot at his boyhood club.

While discussions over a new deal might be taking place behind the scenes, Tuttomercatoweb reported last week that the 67-cap international is weighing up his options this summer and would be open to an emotional return to Old Trafford.

With Brazilian superstar Casemiro announcing this month that he will be leaving Man United on a free transfer at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Carrick reportedly sees McTominay as the key target to come in and replace the five-time Champions League winner.
