Brayan Angulo missed a first-half penalty as Emelec were held to a 0-0 draw by Deportivo Lara in their rearranged Copa Libertadores Group B opener.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but a power outage at the Estadio Metropolitano de Cabudare forced the clash to be rescheduled for Friday.
Angulo was given the opportunity to get the Ecuadorians off to a fine start when Marcos Miers brought down Billy Arce in the penalty area after 16 minutes, but his spot-kick crashed back off the post.
Both sides rarely threatened after that and were only able to conjure up three shots on target between them across the 90 minutes.
Emelec host Huracan in their second group game next Friday, while Lara visit Cruzeiro on Wednesday.
