Derby County 1-1 West Brom: Stoppage-time equaliser from Mepham earns Ramsay first point at the helm

Chris Mepham scored a 95th-minute equaliser as Eric Ramsey earned his first point as West Brom boss in a 1-1 draw with Derby County.

After Patrick Agyemang put the Rams ahead on the stroke of half-time, the Baggies’ efforts in the second half were rewarded as Mepham finished off a well-worked corner to snap their winless run away from home.

It was a tentative start from both sides, with Derby knowing a win would take them into the playoff places, but it was West Brom who nearly went ahead when George Campbell headed wide from a corner.

However, in the 44th minute, the hosts scored with their first shot of the match as Agyemang poked the ball over the line after Max O’Leary spilt his attempt to catch a cross from a free-kick.

West Brom looked particularly dangerous from set-pieces, while Samuel Iling-Junior and Josh Maja both went close in stoppage time as the Baggies threw everything they had in search of an equaliser.

And Ramsay’s side reaped their rewards when a corner was flicked on to the far post by Jayson Molumby, and Mepham headed in for his first goal for the club.

Data Debrief: Molumby in the middle

If West Brom had lost, they would have equalled their worst away run in 135 years (11 straight defeats in 1891). However, Mepham’s heroics at the death mean the Baggies can now look to build on this momentum.

It was a deserved leveller, too, with West Brom producing 0.97 expected goals (xG) from 13 shots to Derby’s 0.29 from five attempts.

While Mepham will take much of the plaudits, Molumby was certainly one of the players who helped drag West Brom to a draw. Along with his assist, Molumby recorded the most touches for his side (65), the most passes in the final third (17), the most possessions won (eight) and the joint-most duels (eight of 11 – tied with Ousmane Diakite).
