The Ajax supporter who attacked AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado during last week’s KNVB Beker clash has been sentenced to six months in jail.
The 19-year-old assailant, known only as Wesley W. during the trial, entered the field of play 36 minutes into the game at the Amsterdam ArenA and aimed a kung-fu kick at Esteban.
The goalkeeper then retaliated and, after his attacker had been restrained by security, was dismissed by referee Bas Nijhuis, much to the disgust of AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek, who ordered his players off te field, thus forcing the abandonment of the game.
Wesley W. was found guilty of “aggravated assault with premeditated malice” at an Amsterdam court on Thursday and sentenced to ten months imprisonment, with the final four months of the term suspended.
Esteban’s dismissal was rescinded last week by the KNVB, which also confirmed the tie will be replayed in full behind closed doors on January 19.
