Giorgian de Arrascaeta said he had “infinite gratitude” to Filipe Luis after the former Chelsea full-back was sacked by Flamengo on Tuesday.
His departure from the Serie A side came as a surprise, with Flamengo making the announcement following an 8-0 win over Madureira to reach the Campeonato Carioca final.
Filipe Luis averaged a trophy every 14 games as he led Flamengo to seven titles in his 101 matches in charge since replacing former Brazil coach Tite in September 2024.
However, their domestic form has left a lot to be desired, with the club currently 11th in the Brazilian top-flight with four points from three games, their worst start in 10 years.
Flamengo have lost the Brazilian Super Cup title to Corinthians and fell to Lanus of Argentina in the South American Recopa, forcing them to take action.
“Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco [assistant] and Diogo Linhares are also leaving the club along with him,” the club said.
“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey.
“The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.”

Among his achievements, Filipe Luis, who won the Premier League as part of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2015, guided Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2025.
In doing so, he became the ninth man to win the competition both as a player and as a coach, having claimed the trophy twice with Flamengo in 2019 and 2022.
The 40-year-old had only just signed a two-year contract extension back in December, and midfielder De Arrascaeta expressed his gratitude to his former boss.
“In a world where everything happens fast and nothing lasts forever, loyalty, respect, and true friendship are worth gold. And you are that,” De Arrascaeta said.
“Life taught me that values are not negotiable, and you are an example of that humility, commitment and heart. You will always be one of us.”
It has been reported that Flamengo are in talks with Leonardo Jardim to come in, with the Portuguese manager out of a job since leaving Cruzeiro at the end of 2025.
