NFL team the St Louis Rams have named Jeff Fisher as their new coach.
Fisher, who did not coach this season, replaces Steve Spagnuolo who was sacked, along with general manager Billy Devaney, after the team Rams won only two games this season.
The 53-year-old had also been linked with the Miami Dolphins, who are also looking for a new coach. The details of the contract were not revealed.
“I’m really excited that the Rams are the best fit for me,” Fisher told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.
“I took a lot of time looking at and exploring in detail the non-economic issues of both clubs.”
Fisher was head coach of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans for 17 seasons before stepping down after the 2010 season, claiming he needed time off.
He compiled a 142-120 regular season record, taking the Titans to the 2000 Super Bowl, where they lost to the Rams.
Fisher also served in 1991 as the defensive coordinator for the Rams when they were located in Los Angeles.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, plan to interview several more candidates before hiring a coach, owner Stephen Ross said.
Fisher’s decision came 10 days after he was interviewed by Miami.
