Guidolin wary of ´new Genoa´

Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin has called on his squad to focus during the absence of several key players on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Ghana internationals Kwadwo Asamoah and Emmanuel Badu, together with Morocco defender Mehdi Benatia, will all be missing during the next month.

The trio’s involvement in the biennial continental tournament, staged jointly by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, could last until as late February 12, depending on how far their respective countries progress.

But with third-placed Udinese flying high in Serie A, Guidolin is keen to minimise any disruption to his squad.

“We must not let ourselves get affected by those who are not here,” Guidolin said.

“Instead we ought to give our best in training and the match situation, looking to the present and battling for every ball.”

Udinese, aiming to bounce back from a surprise Coppa Italia loss to Chievo last week, visit Genoa in Serie A on Sunday.

Their opponents have a new coach in Pasquale Marino, and have already moved to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window, as they look to improve from 12th place in the league.

“Let’s not forget that we are facing a Genoa side that wants to do well in the first home game under new tactician Pasquale Marino,” Guidolin said.

“We’ve got to watch out for the new Genoa, as the coach isn’t the only novelty. They also have new and important players like Alberto Gilardino and Davide Biondini.”
