Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan says he is in no rush to return to fitness for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The marksman, who has been ruled out for three weeks as a result of a hamstring injury has come under heavy criticism to be dropped from the final 23-man squad that will be announced after the team’s preparatory trip to South Africa.
However, upon arrival in Ghana last Thursday night, the Al Ain star told the local press that his main focus now is to gain fitness, but he will not force himself on the coach as there are other capable players to step in his boots.
“Like I said before, when I am 100 percent fit everyone knows what I can do so the most important thing is to get fit first,” the 26-year-old said.
“I am really important to the team and I will do anything possible to get fit for the Nations Cup.”
“I will try to get fit but if I am unable I believe there are other players who can play; the Black Stars is an all round team and I wouldn’t want to draw the team back,” the on-loan Sunderland forward added.
Ghana officials have proposed the player undergo a special treatment session with Serbian therapist Mariana Kovacevic to get back on his feet earlier than projected ahead of the continental showpiece in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
