Luis Suarez says he would “love to retire” alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami as he hinted that he wants to extend his Inter Miami contract.

Suarez played alongside Messi at Barcelona between 2014 and 2020, with the pair winning four LaLiga titles, four Copa del Reys, two Supercopa de Espana titles, a Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Uruguayan then left Barcelona to join Atletico Madrid, but the pair reunited at Inter Miami in 2023.

Suarez scored 20 goals in MLS last season, helping Miami to the Supporters’ Shield, though this term, he has only managed six goals in his 21 appearances.

His current contract is due to run out at the end of the season, as is Messi’s. However, it is reported that the Argentine is expected to put pen to paper on a new deal in the near future.

The 38-year-old has already retired from international football, hanging up his boots last September after a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

Though Suarez noted his future does not hinge on what Messi chooses to do, he likes the idea of finishing his career alongside his friend.

“We’re both at a stage where we’ll make decisions based on ourselves and our families,” Suarez said ahead of Miami’s Leagues Cup quarter-final against Tigres.

“Of course, I’d love to retire with him – we’ve talked about it for years – but it depends on what each of us decides. I’m happy here, I feel good physically, and if the club wants me to retire here, there won’t be any problem.

“I know sometimes I can give more. I want to contribute more to the team, but in football, there are circumstances where things don’t go your way.

“I criticize myself, but what matters is helping Inter [Miami] continue to grow, winning games and titles.

“Individually, we’ll see what happens later – in football, nothing is guaranteed. For now, I want to enjoy this stage, and then we’ll see what the future brings.”
