January incomings at Liverpool unlikely despite injuries, Slot concedes

Arne Slot has tempered any expectations of Liverpool making any signings during the January transfer window, despite having injuries within his squad.

Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice during the summer with the acquisitions of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

The likes of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni also arrived on Merseyside, but Slot’s options at his disposal are thin on the ground.

Isak sustained a fibula fracture during a win over Tottenham, while Leoni is out for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September.

Conor Bradley is also out with a long-term knee issue he sustained against Arsenal. And while Slot did not expect more arrivals, he said the Reds would still be looking out for potential opportunities to strengthen over the next 10 days.

“That is what I expect,” Slot said. “But I always say when there is an opportunity in the market where we think we can strengthen the squad, this club will always try to do so.

“But at this moment I expect it to stay mainly the same.”

“If we prepare well and keep demanding the highest levels from one another, it puts us in the strongest possible position when the Championship begins.”

Slot’s comments are made even more surprising after reports emerged on Friday that Tottenham had opened talks with Liverpool over a move for full-back Andy Robertson.

Robertson is out of contract with the club at the end of the 2025-26 season and said last week that he was undecided about his future following a lack of playing time this term.

The Scotland captain joined the Reds from Hull City in 2017 and has gone on to make 363 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and providing 68 assists.

He has won nine major honours during his time at Anfield, including two Premier League titles and one Champions League crown.

It is believed that the 31-year-old would provide experience for a youthful Spurs side, while also offering cover in the left-back position for Ben Davies, who is set to undergo surgery after breaking his ankle against West Ham.

But at left-back alone, Thomas Frank has Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence and Brazilian Souza, who joined the club for a reported £13m transfer fee on Thursday.
