Harry Kane believes he could overhaul Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record of 41 goals in a season, having made a superb start to the current campaign.
Lewandowski netted 41 times in just 29 appearances for Bayern Munich in 2020-21, bettering Gerd Muller’s previous high of 40 goals in the 1971-72 season.
Kane already has 18 goals in 14 outings this term, with Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side nine points clear at the summit following 12 victories and two draws.
Lewandowski’s record-breaking campaign saw him overperform his expected goals (xG) figure of 32.3 by 8.7, while Kane has already overperformed his 11.9 xG by 6.1.
Per 90 minutes, Lewandowski averaged more xG per 90 minutes in 2020-21 than Kane has in 2025-26 (1.18 to 0.99), as well as more big chances (1.97 to 1.74) and shots (5.01 to 4.47), though the England captain has had more shots on target per 90 (2.57 to 2.48).
The England captain’s average of 1.49 goals per game is only marginally short of Lewandowski’s 1.5, and if he stays fit, he feels he has every chance of making history.
“I think that’s possible, especially with the start I’ve had so far this year. There is still a long way to go,” Kane told Sky Sports DE when asked about the single-season record.
“I need to be able to maintain this level for another four or five months. In football, the hardest thing is to be consistent over a long period of time.
“This record is an incredible record, and it will be hard to beat, I know that. I always think it’s great to try to have these ambitions.”
Bayern visit Heidenheim for their final game of 2025 on Sunday, with a three-week winter break following before they host Wolfsburg.
They welcomed Jamal Musiala back to full training this week, five months on from the creative midfielder suffering multiple ankle ligament ruptures at the Club World Cup.
Kane believes Musiala is the most talented player in Bayern’s squad, while he is also glad to see Alphonso Davies back in contention for minutes after nine months out with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“It’s nice that he’s back. Even before his first injury at the end of last season, I often thought about him being the best player we have in the team,” Kane said of Musiala.
“It’s similar to Alphonso Davies. It feels like we’ve made two valuable signings.
“I’m very happy that both are back. They play an important role – especially in the system in which we play, they fit perfectly.
“They shouldn’t put too much pressure on themselves and first get back into top condition. That will take a few more weeks. But especially from February, towards crunch time, we need them even more.”
