Levy: No England distraction for Redknapp

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy says Harry Redknapp is focused on winning the English Premier League – not on becoming England manager.

Spurs’ 11-game unbeaten run in the league came to an end against Stoke on Sunday, after Tony Pulis’ side secured a 2-1 victory at the Britannia Stadium.

But Levy remains confident that Redknapp can guide his men to the league summit, particularly after Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea on Monday.

“I hope we have a great season and that we can finish in the top four or, who knows, maybe even higher. We want first,” Levy told the London Evening Standard.

“I spoke to Harry and told him not to be too despondent, because if we win our game in hand against Everton, we could be only four points behind Manchester City.”

With Fabio Capello’s contract set to expire after next summer’s Euro 2012 finals, speculation has been steadily mounting that Redknapp could be the man to step in to take over as national team coach.

Levy, however, has claimed that the former West Ham manager is focused on sustaining Spurs’ title challenge rather than entertaining thoughts of England, especially with the north London side making such a strong start to the campaign.

“Harry has 18 months left on his contract,” he said.

“We have had a conversation that says as far as Harry is concerned, he is very happy here and that he doesn’t particularly want to consider England at the present time. We will worry about that situation if it arises in the summer.”

Levy was at the heart of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the off-season, having to fend off interest from Chelsea in midfield star Luka Modric.

And with the Blues expected to delve into the transfer market in January, the Spurs supremo has moved to ward off any renewed attempts to lure away the club’s most prized asset.

“We have a great squad with exceptional talent and none of the main players will be leaving in January,” he said.
