Unai Emery claimed his 100th win as Aston Villa boss as Ollie Watkins’ superb header saw them beat Lille 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 contest.
Villa rode their luck at times at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, but the hosts lacked the cutting edge to beat Emiliano Martinez.
And it took a moment of real quality from Watkins to make the difference.
In the 61st minute, Emiliano Buendia helped on a ball into the box, with Watkins showing great ingenuity to leap above his marker and send a looping header over the advancing Berke Ozer.
Former Lille midfielder Amadou Onana almost doubled Villa’s advantage, but his wicked long-range effort clipped the crossbar.
Martinez was called into action a couple of times as Villa failed to put the game to bed, with Buendia acrobatically turning wide, but the visitors saw out the win to take a lead back to Villa Park.

Data Debrief: Heads up
Watkins may not be the biggest of strikers, but he is excellent in the air, as his finish demonstrated.
In fact, across the last three seasons, Watkins now has more headed goals in all competitions than any other Premier League player (17).
However, it was just Watkins’ second major European goal across his last 22 appearances and his first since 29 January 2025 v Celtic, ending a run of 12 outings without a goal.
This marked Villa’s first competitive win on French soil, and Emery will no doubt view it as the ideal away performance, given his team scored with their only shot on target.
