Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique praised his player for overcoming a “very strange and very difficult” start to the season.

The Champions League holders moved to the top of the league phase after they thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 on Tuesday.

PSG scored seven goals in an away game in European competition for the first time, while they also fielded their youngest-ever Champions League starting lineup, at 23 years and 45 days.

The Parisiens have equalled their longest ever winning run in the Champions League/European Cup – a six-game run achieved between September and December 1994.

Despite not having a regular pre-season, with their first match after the Club World Cup final being the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham, PSG looked like they were back to their best at the BayArena.

Luis Enrique revealed his pride in his players for the way they have adapted as he sets his sights on more European silverware this season.

“We know that we can play against any opponent. These are difficult matches and situations to manage,” said Luis Enrique.

“This start to the season has been very strange and very difficult for us. We got over this moment.

“We are looking to win everything again this season. We have confidence from last year. Our goal is real and true.

“It will be difficult, because there are four or five teams of the same level. We are demanding but we want to continue on this pattern.

“Today in Paris, you know that you can win the Champions League with PSG. The first is always the most difficult trophy. It’s a pride to coach a team like that.”
