Rico Lewis will miss Manchester City’s next two games at the Club World Cup after being given a further two-match ban following his red card against Wydad AC.

Lewis was dismissed in the 88th minute of City’s opening game of the tournament after his boot caught Samuel Obeng in the face, with VAR electing not to interfere.

The 20-year-old was automatically handed a one-match ban and missed City’s 6-0 thrashing of Al Ain, which confirmed their place in the next round of the competition.

But that has since been extended to two more games, as a Fifa disciplinary committee ruled the tackle was “serious foul play”.

Pep Guardiola’s team reportedly appealed the decision but were unsuccessful, meaning Lewis will miss their final group game against Juventus and their last 16 tie.

A statement issued by FIFA read: “The FIFA disciplinary committee has imposed the following sanction on Manchester City’s Rico Lewis who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup match against Wydad AC. Three-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA disciplinary code.”

City head into their final Group G game with Juventus knowing a victory will guarantee top spot, with both teams picking up maximum points from their first two games so far.

This will be the eighth competitive fixture between the two sides, and the first since Juventus beat City 2-0 in the league phase of the Champions League in 2024-25.

The Citizens have won just one of their prior seven meetings with Juventus (D2 L4), a 1-0 win in the UEFA Cup in September 1976, but have impressed at the Club World Cup.

Indeed, they are the second team to win their first four matches in the competition (including all formats) after Bayern Munich (first six through matchday two in 2025).
