Manchester City’s players will refund the cost of tickets for supporters that travelled to Norway for Tuesday’s humiliating Champions League defeat to Bodo/Glimt.

Kasper Hogh scored two goals in the space of three first-half minutes, while Jens Petter Hauge found the net with a wonderful curling effort on a memorable outing for Bodo.

City pulled one back through Rayan Cherki, but Rodri received two yellow cards in 53 seconds to dampen their hopes of a comeback.

The defeat leaves City’s chances of finishing inside the top eight and advancing directly to the last 16 in the balance, as Bodo became the first team to achieve their maiden Champions League victory against an English team since Istanbul Basaksehir did so against Manchester United in November 2020.

The last time City were beaten when facing opponents from a particular country for the very first time in European competition was in March 2011, against Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League.

And City’s senior players – led by captain Bernardo Silva and vice-captains Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland – have decided to reimburse fans.

“Our supporters mean everything to us. We know the sacrifice our fans make when they travel across the world to support us and we’ll never take it for granted,” a statement from the quartet said.

“They’re the best fans in the world. We also recognise it was a lot of travelling for fans who supported us in the freezing cold throughout a difficult evening for us on the pitch.

“Covering the cost of tickets for the fans who travelled to Bodo is the least we can do.

“We’re ready to fight on Saturday against Wolves and again next Wednesday when we face Galatasaray in front of our amazing fans at the Etihad.”

City host the Premier League’s bottom club Wolves on Saturday, having won their last nine matches against teams in 20th place by an aggregate score of 36-0.
