Kylian Mbappe will undergo further tests on the knee injury that has troubled him in recent weeks, but Real Madrid are not currently planning for the forward to undergo surgery.

Mbappe has been battling an issue with the external ligament of his left knee, and he was absent as Madrid defeated Benfica 2-1 in the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie last Wednesday.

The France captain will also miss Monday’s meeting with Getafe in LaLiga, having travelled to Paris for tests.

Los Blancos’ coach Alvaro Arbeloa said on Sunday that France’s upcoming World Cup campaign would have no bearing on decisions over how Mbappe’s fitness is managed.

And the club have now confirmed they will pursue a conservative approach to his treatment for the time being.

“In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee with the aim of optimising his follow-up care and preparing for his comeback,” Madrid said in a statement.

“No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment.”

Mbappe has scored 38 goals and provided five assists for Madrid in all competitions since the end of the Club World Cup, with Harry Kane (50) the only player from Europe’s top five leagues to register more goal involvements than the Frenchman in that time.

After facing Getafe, Madrid go to Celta Vigo on Friday, before taking on Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on March 11.
