Guangzhou Evergrande’s Brazilian striker Muriqui has won the Chinese Super League Player of the Year award after a stunning 2011 season.

The 25-year-old former Vasco da Gama forward claimed the award after scoring 16 goals for Guangzhou during the 2011 campaign, where they ran away with the league title.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had won. It really was a marvellous campaign,” Muriqui said.

“I am really happy that my work has been recognised, especially because this year the competition boasted renowned foreigners such as Dario Conca and Obina. This enhances my achievements even further.”

Liaoning Whowin coach Ma Lin was named Coach of the Year after guiding the club to a shock third-place finish.

Qingdao Jonoon’s 20-year-old forward Song Wenjie won the Rookie of the Year honour after six goals in 19 appearances during 2011.
