Bruno Guimaraes reaffirmed Newcastle United’s long-term aim to win the Champions League as the Magpies captain said he would not “put limits on our dreams” for this season’s campaign.

Brazil midfielder Guimaraes was one of Newcastle’s first signings after a lucrative takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in 2021.

Although Eddie Howe’s side were battling relegation when Guimaraes arrived, he immediately spoke of the possibility of qualifying for and then winning the Champions League in the future.

Newcastle returned to Europe’s elite club competition in 2023-24 and are back again in 2025-26, having also ended the club’s long trophy drought in the EFL Cup last term.

A first Champions League title triumph would appear to remain a long way off, but captain Guimaraes was not interested in talking down their chances ahead of the visit of Barcelona on Thursday.

“Yes, [the aim is] to get as far as we can,” he told a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

“Of course, in the future, [winning the Champions League] is going to be something we’re looking for.

“At the moment, we don’t want to put limits on our dreams, we just want to play game by game and see what we’ve got. We’re very excited, and we hope we can go as far as possible.”

Guimaraes is not shy in his ambition and does not intend to change his outlook.

He added: “I never change my mind. I always look forward, always want to make history for this club.

“It’s nice to be in the Champions League two times in the last three, it’s unbelievable for us. We have to keep going.

“There is a lot of the job to do yet. I can’t wait for tomorrow, and I’m very happy to be part of this club.”
